How ActorBook uses text messaging for reader booking

What is ActorBook?

ActorBook is an audition preparation platform for actors. Actors can book "readers" — experienced scene partners — to help them rehearse for auditions. When an actor needs a reader, they submit a booking request through ActorBook, and the platform notifies available readers via SMS.

How Actors Opt In to SMS

When an actor selects "Text Me" to receive booking updates, they must explicitly check a consent checkbox before their request can be submitted. The checkbox is unchecked by default and contains the following language:

I consent to receive SMS messages from ActorBook about this booking request. Message & data rates may apply. Reply STOP to unsubscribe.

The actor makes this choice for each text-based booking request. A previous choice does not pre-check the box on a later request.

How Readers Opt In to SMS

Readers opt in to receiving SMS booking notifications as part of the Reader Partnership Agreement — the final step before going live in the Reader Directory. The checkbox is unchecked by default:

I consent to receive SMS messages from ActorBook about reader booking requests. Message & data rates may apply. Reply STOP to unsubscribe.

This consent is optional. If a reader leaves it unchecked, ActorBook cannot send that reader booking requests through this text flow. The reader can opt in later from their profile. The choice and its timestamp are stored in the reader's profile record.

What SMS Messages Are Sent

ActorBook sends the following types of SMS messages to opted-in readers:

1. Booking Request Notification

ActorBook: Sarah needs a reader on Tue, Mar 25. ~45 min. Reply 1 to accept, 2 to pass, or 3 if you need to coordinate.

2. Booking Confirmation

You accepted Sarah's request. Contact them directly at (555) 123-4567 to arrange the session. This text conversation is for ActorBook booking replies, not messages to the actor.

3. Coordination Hold

Got it! Contact Sarah directly: text or call (555) 123-4567. Then return to this same text conversation within 2 hours and reply CONFIRM to book or PASS to release. Send those replies here, not to the actor.

4. Status Updates

Thanks! Another reader has already been booked for Sarah's session on Tue, Mar 25. We'll reach out when the next request comes in.

Estimated monthly volume: up to 100 messages. Messages are only sent when actors request bookings.

How to Opt Out

Readers can opt out of SMS notifications at any time by replying STOP to any ActorBook text message. Upon receiving a STOP request, the system immediately:

  • •Stops all future SMS messages to that phone number
  • •Sends a confirmation: "You are unsubscribed from ActorBook SMS alerts. Reply START to resubscribe."
  • •Records the opt-out in the system to prevent future messages
  • •Releases any active booking hold and removes that number from queued requests

Readers can re-subscribe at any time by replying START. For support, reply HELP or email support@actorbook.studio.
